This permaculture design has been based upon Bill Mollison's Introduction to Permaculture book.

permaculture principles

ACCELERATING SUCCESSION & EVOLUTION

  • MULTIPLE PLANTING TO INCREASE THE SOIL QUALITY, CROP ROTATION.

  • SUPPORT TREES HELP TO ESTABLISH THE FRUIT TREES BY PROVIDING GREEN MULCH, WINDBREAKS, ADDING NITROGEN TO THE SOIL AND RETAINING MOISTURE IN THE SOIL.

  • CROP ROTATION IS ALLOWED BY A NUMBER OF VEGETABLE GARDEN BEDS WITH SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT MICRO CLIMATES.

DIVERSITY

  • ELEMENTS AND PLANTS WORK HARMONIOUSLY IN A SMALL SPACE, GUILDS AND COMPANION PLANTING.

  • THE FOOD FOREST IS PLANTED OUT IN THE UNDERSTOREY OF HERBS, FLOWERS AND VEGETABLES THAT SUPPORT THE FRUIT TREES AND ATTRACT BEES.

  • DIVERSITY OF PLANTINGS CAN BE BENEFICIAL TO DETER PESTS, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL NUTRIENTS, PREVENT WEEDS AND SAVE SPACE - BEANS GROWING UP CORN STALKS.

  • CITRONELLA SCENTED GERANIUM WILL BE USED AS A NATURAL PEST DETERRENT AROUND VEGETABLE GARDEN BEDS AND OUTDOOR SEATING AREAS.

EDGE EFFECTS

  • BY INCREASING THE EDGE - THAT PART BETWEEN TWO AREAS - A MORE PRODUCTIVE LANDSCAPE CAN BE PROVIDED.

  • THE POND EDGE IS NATURAL IN SHAPE ALLOWING FOR A VARIETY OF AREAS FOR HABITAT AND PLANT GROWTH.

ATTITUDINAL PRINCIPLES

  • EVERYTHING WORKS BOTH WAYS, THERE ARE NO NEGATIVE INPUTS - WITH INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE YOU CAN TURN IT INTO A BENEFIT.

  • WASTE IS OFTEN SEEN AS SOMETHING THROWN AWAY FROM THE SITE. DOG POO IS COMPOSTED AND THEN PLACED ON NON EDIBLE PLANTS AND ORNAMENTAL TREES AS ADDED NUTRIENTS.
