food forest design

This permaculture design has been based upon Bill Mollison's Introduction to Permaculture book.

permaculture principles

RELATIVE LOCATION

  • LOCATION OF ELEMENTS ARE INTERCONNECTED, INPUTS ARE LOCATED CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER.

  • THE WORM FARM IS LOCATED NEAR THE BACK DAY FOR CONVENIENT DAILY USE, WHERE THE COMPOST IS CENTRAL TO THE VEGETABLE GARDENS FOR EASY SPREADING.

  • WOODLOT IS LOCATED ON THE BOUNDARIES NOT VISITED REGULARLY AS THEY ONLY NEED TO BE VISITED YEARLY.

EACH ELEMENT PERFORMS MANY FUNCTIONS

  • EACH ITEM SERVES A NUMBER OF PURPOSES, INCREASING THE VALUE OF THE ITEM.

  • BASIC NEEDS ARE MET IN MORE THAN ONE WAY FOR SUSTAINABILITY, WATER IS HARVESTED ON SITE, AND RETAINED IN A POND AND WICKING BED.

  • WATER TANKS COLLECT WATER AND BECOME A STRUCTURE FOR THE PASSIONFRUIT TO GROW ON.

  • ACAIA TREES ACT AS A WINDBREAK FOR THE FRUIT TREES, PROVIDE GREEN MULCH AND ARE NITROGEN FIXING TO THE SOIL.

EFFICIENT ENERGY PLANNING

  • AREAS TO BE VISITED FREQUENTLY ARE LOCATED ALONG THE DAILY ROUTE OR NEAR THE BACK DOOR, PLANNING IN ZONES.

  • PATH TO LETTERBOX AND FROM CAR TO BACK DOOR ARE WHERE AREAS TO BE FREQUENTLY VISITED ARE LOCATED.

  • SUN LOVING PLANTS ARE LOCATED IN AREAS OF MAXIMUM DAYLIGHT, DAMP AND SHADED AREAS ARE UTILISED FOR PATHS AND

  • PLANTS THAT THRIVE IN THESE CONDITIONS.

USE BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES

  • USE PLANTS AND ANIMALS TO SAVE ENERGY AND DO THE WORK.

  • THE WORM FARM USES HOUSEHOLD WASTE SCRAPS WHICH ARE TURNED INTO NUTRIENT RICH WORM CASTINGS.

  • PLANT POTATOES AND PUMPKINS TO BREAK UP HARD COMPACTED SOILS, PROVIDE NUTRIENTS AND ADD MOISTURE TO THE SOIL.

  • USE BEES AND BIRDS FOR POLLINATION

ENERGY CYCLING

  • USE NATURAL ENERGY, SELF SUFFICIENT CYCLES NOT RELYING ON EXTERNAL ENERGY.

  • WIND ENERGY WILL BE USED FOR THE POLLINATION FOR THE BLACK MULBERRY IN THE FOOD FOREST.

  • SUNLIGHT WILL BE REFLECTED BY THE POND.

SMALL SCALE INTENSIVE SYSTEMS

  • USE LAND EFFICIENTLY, START SMALL NEAR THE BACK DOOR AND WORK YOUR WAY OUT.

  • SMALL SYSTEMS ARE EASIER TO MANAGE, AND NEED LITTLE IMPUT ONCE ESTABLISHED.

  • EACH ZONE CAN BE COMPLETED IN STAGES SO THAT IT IS MANAGEABLE FOR ONE PERSON TO ESTABLISH.

  • VEGETABLE GARDEN BEDS ARE AROUND 1M WIDE TO ENABLE EASY HAND REACH.
